Our bodies obtain vitamin D (which, strictly speaking, is a steroid hormone) from two sources, our diet and the action of sunlight on our skin, which leads to its natural production by the body. If we all had plenty of sunshine then we would have plenty of vitamin D, but in reality we need to get it from our diet, particularly during the winter months and especially in the elderly, as the body’s ability to produce vitamin D decreases with age. Indeed, up to 60% of the UK population is vitamin D deficient and low levels have been linked to serious health problems later in life.

This is not surprising considering that it is involved in the expression of over 1000 genes. So, while it is known for its vital role in maintaining normal bone health, it actually acts on cells in every organ in the body and has extremely far-reaching effects on human health.
